Eating In & Out

Whether you plan to eat out or eat in, it's helpful to know what's in the neighborhood.  

The following dining list is limited to restaurants within easy walking distance of the building, plus the places on H street, which may require added locomotion via bike, scooter, or Uber. We make no recommendations, but DC Eater or Yelp are reasonably impartial sources. Many restaurants offer take-out and delivery, as well as dining in. 

We also have defined "dining out" rather broadly to include coffee shops, ice cream parlors, and bakeries, each in its own section. And since you will probably eat in at least occasionally, we've included a list of nearby groceries and supermarkets.  

The places listed below are generally listed in terms of their distance from The Telephone Company Condo. But you can also use your favorite search engine to find the kind of food you want.

Whenever possible, we’ve included phone numbers since we’re in a former telephone company building. But we’ve also included hyperlinks because we’re in the 21st century. 

We welcome additions to this list if you run across a place we've missed.  And although none of the places listed here comes with our recommendation, if you discover one that's a real dud, please let us know so we can reconsider its listing.

Markets and Food Halls

Eastern Market, 225 7th St. SE, which is open every day except Mondays, includes a bakery, a deli, a cheese shop, a fish shop, meat and vegetable vendors, a florist and Market Lunch. In addition, on Tuesdays and weekends, there is a farmer’s market and a flea market on the weekends. Check the website for hours and vendors.

Union Market, 1309 5th St. NE has a wide variety of upscale food vendors and eateries. Check the website for hours and vendors.

Union Station Food Court, 50 Massachusetts Ave. NE is technically not on Capitol Hill, but it features 35 food options from familiar fast food brands like McDonald’s and Jersey Mike’s to a sit-down restaurant called Thunder Grill. 

La Cosecha, 1280 4th St. NE is a contemporary marketplace celebrating Latin American culture, food, and art. Check the website for hours and vendors.

The Roost, 1401 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, is a 12,500 square foot food hall with everything from a taco shop and sushi counter to New York–style pizzeria, craft beer, and more under one roof. Open until 10 pm.
